My favorite breed is the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. They are huge, smart, lovable dogs.
Ours is great with kids, other dogs, and people in general. He is slightly afraid of cats, though. This is hilarious because he's about 120 lbs.
This breed loves to swim. I know we can't get ours out of the pool in the summer, and he about passes out from excitement if we take him to the beach.
Chessies are very loyal and make an awesome family dog. Ours will bark a little if someone comes to the door or if he hears someone around that he doesn't know, but other than that is fairly quiet.
They only shed a bit, but their hair isn't too long, so it's never been an issue for us. Compared to our Siberian Husky, he barely sheds at all, ha,ha!
We had almost no trouble training him. He picks up on things very quickly. We even taught him to shake on command when he comes out of the pool.
I've owned several breeds of dogs and I would say that Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are the easiest/most loving/most loyal dogs I've had.
