by Alexandra

Hello,
I have a 1-1/2 year old male Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and all of a sudden today he started pooping a yellow liquid.
A few hours after this started occurring, he threw up a clear liquid which appeared to be saliva.
Please help!!
Answer From the Editors at Dog-SpoilingHello Alexandra,
While I can't say for sure what is up with your dog, the yellow liquid stool you describe is generally associated with a form of diarrhea.
The most common cause of this results when pets eat something tainted from the garbage, consume a dead animal, plant material or anything else they can't digest.
It can also result from an abrupt change in diet, a food sensitivity, lactose intolerance, or a lack of sufficient fiber.
Some other causes of diarrhea include intestinal parasites, viral infections, drug reaction, liver or kidney disease, stress, pancreatitis, or inflammatory bowel disease.
So as you can see, it could be something simple or something much more serious.
As for the the vomiting of clear liquid, this is often a sign of a gastric upset, but again it could be happening for a number of other reasons.
Diarrhea and upset stomachs of the type associated with consuming some kind of indigestible matter, usually doesn't last beyond 24 hours.
However, since it is impossible to know exactly what is causing your pet's problem, the best advice I can give you is to take your spaniel to the vet - or at least give the vet a call.
By asking you a few questions, the vet may be able to evaluate the cause and put your mind at rest.
In the meantime, for additional information, you can read our page about the causes and treatment of diarrhea in dogs,

We hope your dog gets to feeling better real soon.
