No-Bake Dog Treat Recipe Nutrition

Before we get to the recipe, let's talk about the nutritional value that makes this one of the best dog treats.

  • Pumpkin: Rich in vitamins A, C, and B6, plus fiber and antioxidants.
  • Peanut Butter: Provides protein, healthy fats, B vitamins, vitamin E, zinc, magnesium.
  • Oats: A good source of carbohydrates and fiber in the form of beta glucan, high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

The great thing about using peanut butter for treats is that it's an all time favorite flavor with our furry friends and easily digestible for most dogs.

Plus, it can be included in a variety of recipes as an alternate or second ingredient. As long as it is unsweetened (no xylitol ever), both the smooth and chunky variety can be used.

NOTE: If you have any questions about ingredients in any dog treat recipe, it's always a good idea to ask your vet because he/she knows your pet's needs the best.

Recipe Substitutions

Feel free to make changes to the recipe according to your personal preferences or to address any food allergies your pet may have.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Canned unsweetened pumpkin puree OR mashed fresh pumpkin. Either will work. It's ideal to keep the amount of added sugar low because dogs don't need any extra sugar in their diet.
  • Mashed butternut squash or mashed sweet potato instead of pumpkin.

Use any of these nut butters in place of peanut butter:

  • Almond butter
  • Cashew butter (not raw, nuts must be roasted)
  • Hazelnut butter

Instead of Rolled Oats:

  • Instead of rolled oats use: quinoa flakes,  quick cooking oats, or buckwheat groats. But don't use steel cut oats.

Recipe Variations

Recipe Variation Ideas:

  • Add cinnamon for a spiced flavor.
  • Not all cinnamon is created equal when it comes to dogs. The best kind to use in treat recipes is Ceylon cinnamon and while the aroma will get Fido's attention, the ASPCA recommends not going over one teaspoon in any dog treat recipe.
  • Mix in shredded carrots or apples for extra nutrition.

TIPS:

  • Choose fresh over canned pumpkin for more nutritional value.
  • Add a sprinkle of flaxseed for another healthy booster!
  • Mashed banana can be substituted for peanut butter if desired.

No Bake Dog Treat Recipe Notes

Best Way to Store:
Store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. Dogs don't care if they are frozen, plus they are more chewy. Or, you can let them come to room temperature very quickly anyway if you have a dog with dental issues.

Serving Size for Dogs:
Serve 1-2 treats per day, depending on your dog’s size and the size you make the treats.

Main Equipment Needed:

Ingredients:

1 cup peanut butter (make sure it’s xylitol-free)
1 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1/4 cup water (if needed)

Instructions:

Mix Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the peanut butter, rolled oats, and pumpkin puree. Stir until well mixed. If the mixture is too dry, add a little water, one tablespoon at a time, until it holds together.

Shape the Treats: Scoop out small portions of the mixture and roll them into balls or flatten them into patties.

Chill: Place the treats on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and place in freezer for about an hour to firm them up. The treats can then be kept in freezer bags for a couple of months, if they last that long.

Serve: Once set, they’re ready to serve! Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge.
