Shar Pei - My Pups New Friend?
(A Collie Puppy Owner)
I already have a (beautiful!) 6-month-old Collie bitch, and am giving some serious thought to re-homing a 12-week-old Shar Pei.
Are they likely to get along with each other?
Answer From the Editors at Dog-SpoilingHello and thanks for your question.
I am glad you are taking some time to think about whether a Shar Pei and a Collie would make good friends.
Every dog is unique as to their personality so there is really no telling at their young ages how they will get along as they mature.
That being said, the Shar Pei has a history as a fighting dog and although this is not the case today, the genetic disposition often resurfaces in aggressive behavior toward other dogs. They are also considered to be one-person dogs and it is quite likely that a dog of this breed would not like to share your affection or attention with another dog.
It would be helpful to know what the Shar Pei's parents are like regarding friendliness and any information about if they have shown any dog aggressive traits.
You do not say the sex of the Shar Pei which is another real important consideration especially if it is a male. Would you have them both spayed?
In general, the
Collie dog breed is known for its gentle and people-friendly demeanor. Would that mean that the Shar Pei would take over as the dominant dog? Would that result in a problematic relationship? Would a new dog make the Collie feel she has been replaced in your affection?
These are just a few questions to address.
On the other hand, if you do decide to raise them both, I definitely think you would need the help of a very qualified trainer to pull it off.
To be honest, if you really want another pet, I would suggest re-homing one of the same breed. I personally think pairing with a Shar Pei would be difficult.
Best of luck to you.
