Here's a simple dog treat recipe to put in your recipe file under "quick and easy dog treats."

With only three ingredients, this recipe meets both criteria and more, being not only quick, but also healthy.

These treats can be made on those days when you are short on time, but still committed to making homemade treats for your furry friends.

The flavor can be adapted to suit the one that your pup loves, making it a win-win recipe - easy for mom and tantalizing for your pet.

Another advantage of this recipe is that the ingredients have a long shelf life, as in non-perishable. So once you've made this recipe and it has been pup-approved, you can stock up on the ingredients in your pantry.

Then you'll be ready to make the treats on the spur of the moment for your lucky dog.

Simple Dog Treat Recipe Nutrition

Before we get to the simple dog treat recipe, let's talk about the nutritional value that makes this one a standout healthy treat for your pet.

  • Wheat Germ - a powerhouse ingredient that's been around for thousands of years. Rich in minerals zinc, manganese, phosphorus, and magnesium that are all beneficial to the immune system and are packed inside the germ.
  • Nonfat dry milk providing protein, calcium, selenium, copper, manganese, iron, and choline.
  • Baby Food: Protein, carbohydrates, zinc and iron.

Gerber baby food contains no garlic or onions making it a safe choice for dog treats. These two ingredients are often debated when it comes to their use in dog treats, but for me personally, I think it's safer to avoid them in any treat recipes.

According to one authority, Odie Pet Insurance, onions, as well as garlic, leeks, and chives are part of the Allium family. They contain compounds like disulfides and thiosulphates, which can harm a dog's red blood cells.

Recipe Notes

Recipe Variation Ideas:

  • Mix in shredded carrots or apples for extra flavor and nutrition.
  • Add some parsley or mint for a sweeter breath.
  • Try other baby food flavors such as apple chicken, vegetable beef, chicken rice, or even the fruit flavors.
  • Choose organic brands for superior ingredients.

TIPS:

  • Instead of using cookie cutters, roll the dough into a log and cut into 1/2" slices. And if you want even smaller for training treats, cut the slices into six pieces. Be sure to adjust the baking time if you do this.
  • Roll out dough and cut with a pizza cutter into squares.
  • Pinch off dough and roll into large or small balls depending on your dog's needs, then flatten them with a cookie stamp.
  • For crunchier treats, return them to the oven, after it has been "turned off" and leave them there for a few hours or overnight.

Serving Size for Dogs:
Serve 1-2 treats per day, depending on your dog’s size and the size you make the treats.

Best Way to Store:
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months. Dogs don't care if they are frozen, plus they come to room temperature very quickly. They may be softer after being frozen, but a few minutes in a hot oven will restore the crunch, in case your dog cares.

Main Equipment Needed:

  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cup
  • Cookie cutters or stamps
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper

Simple Dog Treat Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cups wheat germ
  • 1/4 non-fat dry milk
  • 2 4-ounce jars of baby food turkey, chicken, or beef (I chose the Gerber brand for this recipe because it has no additives.)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Combine the wheat germ and dried milk in a medium bowl unless you double the recipe, then use a large bowl.
  • Gradually stir in the baby food until a soft dough is formed.
  • At this point either roll out the dough and cut into shapes, or just pinch off pieces to the size you want and with floured hands roll into balls. For reference, small would be olive size.
  • Flatten the balls with a dog cookie stamp or just use a fork.
  • Place treats on prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes. Treats should feel hard at this point, but add a minute or two if they aren't.
  • Let cool completely on a wire rack before serving.
